Film Review – Guardians of the Galaxy

I’m a huge fan of films based on Marvel comics and have been avidly following the adventures of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and all the Avengers. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this latest addition to the superhero stable, Guardians of the Galaxy, but perhaps that was a good thing because I was very pleasantly surprised. This film is quite simply huge fun!

A group of misfits are thrown together by chance because they all want the same thing – to sell a mysterious orb (which contains an Infinity Stone – a very powerful weapon) for the highest price and share the money. Thrown into prison, they manage to escape with the orb and are then hunted across galaxies by a villain called Ronan the Accuser. The misfits – a human called Peter Quill who is the main hero of the film, a green woman, a talking raccoon, a walking tree and a guy that looks like a wrestler with weird tattoos – don’t like each other much but have to learn to get along, and they end up being best friends. Somehow they have to find a way to defeat Ronan and stop him from killing the people of an entire planet, and along the way, they become the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I wouldn’t say they’re superheroes exactly, but they all have useful skills. I really enjoyed watching them come together as a group and gel, and I absolutely loved the tree! (No spoilers, but he’s wonderful at the very end). As always with Marvel films, you get little snippets that connect with the other films and I can’t wait to see what they’re going to come up with next! Bring it on.
